Watercolour painting with Art GRIP Aquarelle watercolour pencils

1. Trace template onto watercolour paper

  • Use a black lead pencil and carbon paper to trace your desired template onto watercolour paper.
  • Tip: You may also take a Castell 9000 black lead pencil 4B and trace your drawing onto transparent paper.
  • Turn the paper over and trace the lines on the back.
  • Turn the paper over again and put it onto watercolour paper.
  • Trace the lines and make sure that you do not press the pencil down too hard.

2. Colour your drawing

  • Tip: Practise on a separate sheet of paper before applying colour.
  • Now take Art Grip Aquarelle watercolour pencils to colour the individual sections of your drawing; proceed section by section.
  • Use the colours indicated on the template.
  • The shaded blue areas will automatically give depth to the gull’s body.

3. Gradually build up the painting

  • In this example, nearly all pencil strokes are drawn in the same direction.
  • However, you may also obtain particularly bright sections by applying the colours with crisscrossing pencil strokes.
  • Tip: Practise various hatching techniques on a separate piece of paper and check the results before going for it.

4. Apply a wash over the coloured areas

  • Produce watercolour effects by applying a wash over your coloured painting.
  • For this purpose, take the smaller or the bigger paintbrush, always depending on the size of the section you are working on.
  • Make sure that you always work from lighter into darker areas.
  • Please note: Never dip your watercolour pencils into water!
